Preliminary Exercise 2: Barthes' Theory Semiotic Analysis of The Hunger Games Catching Fire Table 2
In Exercise 2, We worked on a Semiotic analysis on the film, The Hunger Games. The movie takes place in the dystopian post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, where a boy and a girl are annually chosen as "tributes" and made to participate in the grandiose televised fight to the death known as the Hunger Games. In the Exercise the objective key concept of the lesson is to be able to recognize and define signs (visually and audibly) when analyzing media products for the following: Characters, Costumes, Acting, Setting, Color, Lighting, and Sound. In the scene that we watched we witnessed Katniss Everdeen's dress ignite in flames and change from a white dress to a black dress. The Connotative meaning of this is that when the dress ignites in flames it shows the start of a rebellion and the dress turning black connotatively represents the first major sign of the rebellion against the leader. This along with many signs in the clip showed the start of the rebellion that was starting to take place.
The objective of the exercise was to be able to recognize and define signs visually and audibly. The process of the started with me and my team doing research on what different signs can represent and their meanings, after we analyzed the movie clip after and started figuring out what the different signs in the slip represented. After we created our poster. On this exercise Summa.W, Aleymar. N, and me (Alivia.C) worked on completing the exercise. In this exercise I learned how to recognize signs and their meanings. I learned that colors, make-up, hair, costumes, setting, etc. all have a meaning and represent something in the film.
