Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Setting for National Lampoon's European Vacation PowerPoint Presentation

Setting in film is its time and place. Either the setting is stated clearly to us, or it is subtly hinted at. It can be inferred from the environment, dress, culture, architecture. In film there are many key characteristics some of them being Mise-en-Scene, cinematography, editing, color, sound & performance, and shots. Some of the characteristics that have I established as the most predominant to a film producer is Mise-en-Scene because without the Mise-en-Scene elements the film wouldn't have a set mood. Mise-en-Scene contributes to the overall presentation and look of the film, and it also contributes to helping the audience understand information about the character and what they are trying to represent. The least significant to a film producer would be color in my opinion because many movies could be made in black and white. In many films in this period have scenes with color and some with just black and white. Furthermore, setting is an important Mise-en-Scene element because setting helps clarify the movie's theme and helps the audience understand how the character views their surroundings.

The objective of this exercise was to watch the 3:36s clip and document and analyze the elements of setting in the clip. The media product that was created was a multimedia presentation. The media product that was analyzed was a short clip from the film National Lampoon's European Vacation. In the film the family won a European vacation and when the family went on the family vacation many events had taken place and things started taking a turn for the worst. In many scenes of the film the message that was being shared was the cultural shock between Americans and Europeans.

The media text that was created was a multimedia presentation and it is supposed to engage our audience because it gives further information on the meaning of the film and would help the audience further understand it. In this exercise we were told to watch the 3:36s clip and create a PowerPoint that analyzed the elements of setting for the film. In this lesson I learned about the elements of setting and how they help further develop a film.On this assignment 3 students worked on creating it. Summa. W, Aleymar. N, and me (Alivia. C).
