Preliminary Exercise 2: Barthes' Theory Semiotic Analysis of The Hunger Games Catching Fire Table 2

               In Exercise 2, We worked on a Semiotic analysis on the film, The Hunger Games. The movie takes place in the dystopian post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, where a boy and a girl are annually chosen as "tributes" and made to participate in the grandiose televised fight to the death known as the Hunger Games. In the Exercise the objective key concept of the lesson is to be able to recognize and define signs (visually and audibly) when analyzing media products for the following: Characters, Costumes, Acting, Setting, Color, Lighting, and Sound. In the scene that we watched we witnessed Katniss Everdeen's dress ignite in flames and change from a white dress to a black dress. The Connotative meaning of this is that when the dress ignites in flames it shows the start of a rebellion and the dress turning black connotatively represents the first major sign of the rebellion against the leader. Preliminary Exercise 1: Barthes’ Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs Semiotic Analysis Table

                 In the Exercise 1 the key concept of the lesson was for students to be able to recognize and define signs when analyzing media products for Denotative and connotative meanings. Another element we defined and learned about was semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs and their meanings and the interpretation of messages in a text. Furthermore, in Exercise 1 we learned about someone named Roland Barthes. Roland Barthes was a French literacy theorist, and his theory stated that there are more than one way to read a code and that a text has multiple meanings. Barthes analyzed the process and studied the relationship between denotation and connotation. Also, according to his theory anything in culture can be a sign and send a specific message. Introduction to Media Blog : Welcome to My AICE Media Studies Blog!

                        To me the importance of studying Media Studies is being able to analyze and understand the different types of media and what every media type means. In my free time I like to watch a lot of movies and TV shows, so being in Media Studies and being able to understand the different types of media could help me understand the different signs and dialogue that is being used. A favorite media product that I consume would be Netflix. Netflix has a purpose to entertain audiences of all different age groups and features all different genres. Its features include watching shows or movies, it newly offers games to play that are based off their hit movies or TV shows. It could be engaging to my age group considering Netflix contains a lot of shows and movies that are targeted for my age group.
